NATIONAL CONTACT POINT PARTICIPATES IN A DUE DILIGENCE WORKSHOP ORGANIZED BY THE SNMPE NACIONAL

Lima, March 15, 2023.- The National Contact Point for Responsible Business Conduct of the OECD in Peru, located in PROINVERSION, participated in the «Capacity strengthening workshop to strengthen due diligence in social and environmental matters under the standards of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)” organized by the National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy – SNMPE.

Members of the SNMPE participated in this workshop where an introduction to the OECD standards and its approach on responsible business conduct and due diligence was presented with a view to the development of the Human Rights Due Diligence Guide for the Energy Mining Sector that SNMPE is working on.

Lisbeth Loja, member of Peru’s National Contact Point team, presented Peru’s background and commitments to the OECD, that started with Peru’s adherence in 2008 to the OECD Declaration on International Investment and Multinational Companies. Similarly, she explained the scope of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Companies, Responsible Business Conduct and the role of National Contact Points.

Likewise, German Zarama, Focal Point for Latin America and the Caribbean of the OECD Centre for Responsible Business Conduct presented the most important aspects of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas which provides detailed recommendations to help companies respect human rights and avoid contributing to conflict through their mineral purchasing decisions and practices. The due diligence process outlined in this guide has five steps and applies to all companies along the mineral supply chain, producing or potentially using minerals from conflict-affected or high-risk areas.

Finally, Julio Martínez, General Manager of The Social Design Lab, explained the progress to date in the development of the Human Rights Due Diligence Guide for the Mining and Energy Sector that the SNMPE has been working on.
