Lima, December 18, 2020.- The National Contact Point for Responsible Business Conduct of Peru, located in PROINVERSION, held today the webinar «OECD Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct and Good Practices of Due Diligence in Mining Companies”, with the aim of promoting good business practices in the mining sector related to the standards of the OECD Guidelines and their recommendations of Due Diligence for Responsible Business Conduct.
The inauguration of the virtual event, organized with the support of the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE), was in charge of the Executive Director of PROINVERSION, Rafael Ugaz, who pointed out that in order to preserve and consolidate the environment that we have in Peru for investments, it is necessary to take into account that the Government and the business sector need to develop complementary initiatives.
Likewise, he mentioned the importance of the role of private investment during the latest years, as well as the significant participation of the business sector in the processes of Public Private partnerships executed by PROINVERSÓN, and that the entity will continue promoting the attraction of responsible investments that contribute to the developing sustainable.
On the other hand, the Director of the Investor Services Division of PROINVERSIÓN, Alejandro Prieto, highlighted that the institution disseminates the OECD Guidelines in the context of the commitments assumed by Peru since 2008, when adhering to the Declaration on International Investment and Multinational Enterprise. Within that framework, in 2009 it was decided the National Contact Point was to be located in PROINVERSION.
He also stated that the tools recommended by the OECD to promote Responsible Business Conduct such as the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises the Due Diligence Guidance for the Responsible Business Conduct and other sectorial guides, are very useful when operating a business responsibly, taking into account that those actions can generate a base of mutual trust between the companies and the localities where they carry out activities, promoting the contribution of the business to the sustainable development
The event also included a session focused on the development of four cases of good practices in Due Diligence in mining companies with the participation of Goldfields’ Technical Manager of Sustainable Development for the America Region, Giovanni Rossinelli; the Legal Manager and Compliance Officer of Cerro Verde, Patricia Quiroz; the Legal Corporate Manager of MINSUR, Emily Alfageme and the Coordinator of Humans Rights and Voluntary Principles of Anglo American, Jenny Vento.
The President of the Mining Sector of the SNMPE and member of the Human Rights Committee, José Palma García-Zapatero closed the event and emphasized the valuable contributions made during the development of the four cases of Due Diligence practices presented by the exhibitors of the respective mining companies. It should be noted that the organization of this Workshop to promote the OECD Guidelines and Due Diligence for Conduct Responsible Business, are one of the various activities carried out by the National Contact Point during the year 2020, such as:
- Participation in virtual meetings during the year 2020 by the Working Party on RBC and the Global Network of NCPD.
- Participation in the activities developed during the year 2020, related to the Latin American NCPs and the CERALC project.
- Presentation on the progress of PROINVERSION (through the Investment Committee) and the NCP in the context of Peru’s actions aimed at a future accession as a member country of the OECD. This meeting was held virtually on October 15th, 2020 Congress’ Special Commission following up the accession process of Peru to the OECD – CESIP.
